Association Management Industry Reports Findings From Survey

Tallahassee, FL —According to a new survey among companies that manage associations and not-for-profit
organizations, almost one of every four clients (24%) managed by an Association Management Company
(AMC) has annual revenues surpassing $1 million. Nearly half (47%) of associations and not-for-profit
organizations managed by AMCs have annual revenues more than $500,000. AMC Institute, the trade
association that represents the Association Management Company industry, today released results from a new
survey of its members, among them Association Management Resources (AMR) in Tallahassee, Florida.
"We continue to see a steady increase in the number of associations and not-for-profits managed by AMCs,
which is certainly a good sign," said Susan Cabrera, President of AMR. "But this new information shows our
industry is managing larger associations and not-for-profit organizations with members around the world. No
longer are AMCs only representing local and state groups. More national and international organizations are
seeking services from AMCs and achieving significant results."
Ms. Cabrera added that not-for-profits are attracted to AMCs because they are able to add staff specialists
when an organization's needs grow or when immediate opportunities or challenges arise.
"Not-for-profit boards are seeking more flexibility and more value from their investment in staff and
headquarters," said Ms. Cabrera. "They are looking for partners that can provide solutions and services at a
moment's notice. This is a distinct advantage of working with an AMC like AMR."
The survey also found that nearly half (49%) of associations and not-for-profit organizations managed by
AMCs include more than 500 members per association, and almost one-quarter (23%) include more than 1500
members per association/not-for-profit organization.
"Nearly 8 in 10 associations or not-for-profit organizations managed by AMCs that responded to the survey
report they are national or international," said Ms. Cabrera. "This supports the fact that AMCs like AMR offer a
depth of resources and expert staff required by associations to serve members across the country and around
the globe."
Association Management Companies provide integrated headquarters and staff solutions for industry trade
groups, professional societies and charitable foundations. There are more than 675 association management
companies that represent nearly 5,000 association and not-for-profit organizations around the world.

Association Management Firm adds diverse clients
By Dave Hodges

It's been a busy time at Association Management Resources Inc., a Tallahassee firm that provides management services for professional societies and nonprofits.
AMR has picked up two more clients, the Green Cross Academy of Traumatology and the Israeli Medical Association-World Fellowship USA chapter. And if AMR President Susan Cabrera weren't busy enough already, she will wear two more hats — she'll be the executive director of both.
The Green Cross Academy of Traumatology was established in 1997 after bombing of the Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City. Its members work to establish professional standards for education, certification and deployment for the new field of traumatology.
Later, the group responded with psychological and counseling assistance for the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks in New York and Washington, D.C., and Hurricane Katrina and the Southeast Asia tsunami in 2005.
"What Green Cross does is they are the mental health arm," Cabrera explained. While the Red Cross responds with food, shelter and other emergency relief, the Green Cross provides emotional support for victims and disaster relief personnel.
The Israeli Medical Association originated in 1912 and has grown from 32 physicians into a worldwide organization. The USA chapter will host programs for medical professionals in the interest of advancing medical care here, in Israel and other parts of the world.
AMR got started in Tallahassee in 1997 and has a staff of 10. Cabrera says the team provides a range of association governance services, along with strategic planning, administrative back-office functions, budgeting, finance and communications. "It's an overall umbrella helping to grow these organizations," she added.
In Tallahassee, the association field is big. There are about 400 with headquarters here employing 5,400 people, according to a 2007 study by Kerr & Downs Research. The economic impact on the community is more than $887 million a year.
Consequently, it's important for these groups to thrive for the benefit of their members. Viewed in that light, sound association management is a vital function.
Cabrera began her career at the Travel Industry Association while attending American University. After graduation, she headed to California where she worked for the Orange County Bar Association. She came to Florida in 1992 and managed three medical societies before starting AMR seven years ago.
"I started in this field as an intern right out of college," Cabrera said. "Nonprofit management is something you really, really like or really, really don't. And obviously, I do."

AMR Accredited by International Organization
Association Management Resources is the
first Florida-based company and one of only 34 firms nationally,
to be accredited by the International Association of Association
Management Companies (IAAMC).
IAAMC accreditation is achieved only when an association management
company (AMC) demonstrates a commitment and ability to deliver
consistent, quality service to current and prospective clients.
To apply for IAAMC accreditation, an AMC must demonstrate that
it has adopted and utilizes internal quality service systems. The
ANSI/IAAMC Standard was developed to assist AMC's in the
development of these systems. Recently approved by the American
National Standards Institute (ANSI), the Standard also serves as
the source document for the IAAMC Accreditation Program.
Susan Cabrera, President of AMR, said, "I'm thrilled
to have achieved this distinction and honor. I am proud to deliver
consistent and quality service to all our association clients and
make it our mission to further each client's goals."
AMR brings over seventy years of cumulative experience in event
management, association management and client relations for non
profit and trade associations. The collective experience includes
media relations, design and production of marketing information,
special events, educational conferences and trade shows, financial
management, continuing professional education seminars, board governance,
strategic planning, and building and maintaining association membership.
Some of AMR's clients said: "AMR provides Top Shelf
service at every occasion" and "AMR has been instrumental
in helping our association grow and in making our presence known
throughout the state".
